upon the whole man. It . . .

  enlightens the understanding,

  directs the will,

  purifies the affections,

  regulates the passions, and

  corrects the different excesses 

to which different people are by 

constitution or habit inclined. 

It does not impart any new natural powers, 

though it teaches the use and improvement 

of those we have received.
